July 30 – Daily news from the red-shirts รายงานข่าวรายวัน จาก ชาวเสื้อแดง

Sorry, this website is now closed

There will be no more updates published on this blog for the foreseeable future.

Thank you to the people who visited this site to gain first hand information on the red-shirts peaceful protest against the dual standards in Thailand. Much remains untold about what has happened in Thailand following the May 19, 2010 crackdown by the government of Thailand and the Thai Army.

People are suffering, people have been ignored, people have had their human rights not just abused but totally shattered. Certain people at the highest levels of Thai society are determined to see that their grasp on power and wealth remain unchanged.

The red-shirt leadership is in total disarray. There is now no one organization, no one central group in control. The inability to foresee how vicious, determined and extreme the government crackdown was going to be and the speed with which the leadership abandoned the rally and the people who answered the call is a sad indictment of the organizational skills of those in charge.

Thailand needs change, but for that to happen the red-shirts need better, stronger, more determined leaders. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all of those who have lost loved ones, to all of those loyal, resolute and determined people who answered the call against tyranny and double standards, to all of those who put up with the discomfort, the heat, the rain, the primitive conditions. You are the real heroes of the red-shirt movement. Your sacrifices will not be forgotten.

Thank you for your support over the last five months and for reading. We hope the information and photographs we published was informative and valuable. All of the material will remain online in its present state so that people who come searching for details on what happened in Bangkok in March, April and May of 2010 will know.

RedPhanFa2day rapidly became one of the most popular websites on the entire internet, recording an Alexa ranking of just over one million. Many thanks to the people who helped make this website possible.

If there is any change to the status of this blog it will be announced via our Twitter feed and by email.

April 24 – Daily news from the red-shirt rally at Ratchaprasong

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

RATCHAPRASONG, APRIL 24, 2010: United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leaders have this afternoon again challenged the government, security officials and the operator of the BTS Skytrain system to produce the video they claim to have showing the M79 grenade attack on April 22 was launched from Lumpini Park.

UDD co-leader Dr. Weng Tochirakarnhas said its high time the statements by deputy Bangkok governor Thirachon Manomaipibul and deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban were substantiated or publicly withdrawn.

“It’s time for Suthep and Thirachon to put up or shut up. Why is it that almost two days after the Sala Daeng BTS station was attacked with M79s this supposedly incriminating evidence is yet to see the light of day?

“How is it possible for Suthep to know just a short time after the attack that the M79s were launched from behind the King Rama VI statue before any investigation had even began?” he asked.

According to Dr. Weng, an M79 cartridge measures just 40 x 46mm (1.57 x 1.81inch) and travels through the air at 75m/s (246ft/s) and has a maximum effective rage of just 350m (1,148ft).

He said, “it defies belief that anything so small and traveling so fast can be detected by the BTSs surveillance cameras. Irrespective of this, both Suthep and Thirachon claim to have proof they were fired from the red-shirts’ area.

“Surely if this incriminating evidence exists it would have by now been made public, instead of being reported only in media sympathetic to the government”, Dr Weng said.

“We want to the BTS Skytrain operator to supply us with the entire surveillance camera footage prior to and after the M79 attack occurred, not just an edited portion, so that we can have the entire recording forensically examined by independent experts in an attempt to verify the originality of anything that is claimed to be shown.

If the government, security officials and the BTS operator is unwilling to make this recording available today, April 24, it speaks volumes of the credibility of anything that might be released in the future”, Dr. Weng added.

RATCHAPRASONG, APRIL 24, 2010: United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) co-leader Dr. Weng Tochirakarnhas has this morning slammed the alleged accusations and confession made by actor Methi Amornwuthikul to Department of Special Investigation (DSI) investigators.

Dr. Weng said Methi has never been a member of the leadership team, had never participated in strategy discussions or decisions relating to the ongoing red-shirts rally, and had breached the UDDs “peaceful protest” rule by being apprehended in possession of an assault rifle allegedly taken from Thai soldiers during the April 10 clash with protesters at Si Yak Kok Woe intersection.

“We have stressed all along that our campaign for the dissolution of parliament and the holding of fresh elections is a peaceful one and protesters have been repeatedly told not to bring weapons to either the Phan Fa Bridge or Ratchaprasong protest sites.

“Our large team of guards are constantly briefed and instructed to search vehicles and the bags of people entering the protest area for weapons and we have stated over and over again that anyone found to be in possession of weapons will be handed over to authorities”, Dr. Weng said.

Dr. Weng said that while Methi may or may not have made the comments attributed to him in some media, it appears irrefutable that he was found in possession of an IMI Tavor TAR-21 assault rifle and claimed to have shot at the army, both of which directly breaches the non-violent protest guidelines.

“Whenever we have recovered war weapons from soldiers we have quickly handed them over to the police.

“According to some media reports Methi is alleged to have identified who the “men in black” were that were seen firing at troops on April 10. UDD leaders will be delighted if he has shed light on this topic as the identity of these people has been one of speculation amongst the leadership team since the night the army used deadly force against our peaceful protest”, he added.

Dr. Weng also said comments published earlier in the week in a story carried by Reuters wherein Sean Boonpracong was identified as a “UDD spokesman” were neither the official view or opinion of the UDD leadership team.

“In the Reuters story Mr. Boonpracong is quoted as saying the men in black seen on April 10, ‘were a secret unit within the army that disagrees with what’s going on. Without them, the black clad men, there would have been a whole lot more deaths and injures.’”

“The only official spokesman for the UDD are the core leaders, in particular Natthawut Saikua, and any other comments coming from people should be viewed as being their personal opinions only. Mr. Boonpracong is a translator only for the UDD and is not authorized to make any public comments on behalf of the leadership team.

“Since our peaceful protesters were attacked with deadly force on April 10 we have repeatedly called on the government to investigate who these men in black were. If Mr. Boonpracong has any information on who these people were he should provide the information to the leaders immediately and we will pass this information on to the necessary authorities”, Dr. Weng added.

Addressing the red-shirt protesters from the Ratchaprasong stage earlier today, Dr. Weng told protesters the UDD was committed to continuing its non-violent goal of bringing about the dissolution of parliament and urged protesters to report any person they see with weapons to UDD security staff.

“Our protest is a peaceful one. Anyone who wishes to bring weapons to our protest is not welcome. It is the government that has used deadly weapons against us and people who want to bring weapons here are hurting our goal and should be considered an agent provocateur working against us and not for us”, he said.

Today is day 42 of the red-shirts pro-democracy protest against the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the 22nd day protesters have occupied the Ratchaprasong shopping precinct in the heart of Bangkok.

Media Advisory:

RATCHAPRASONG, APRIL 14, 2010: Core United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leader Natthawut Saikua has this morning announced that all red-shirt protesters and infrastructure will today be moved from Phan Fa Bridge to Ratchaprasong on Ploenchit Rd in central Bangkok.

The decision to consolidate the protest in the heart of the Bangkok business and shopping district was reached following a meeting of UDD leaders where fresh information relating to the ongoing security risk to protesters was tabled.

In addition to consolidating protesters in the center of Bangkok, upgraded security arrangements will be implemented at and around the Ratchaprasong stage following the information tabled this morning.

Mr. Natthawut said business owners in and around the Ratchaprasong rally site have nothing to fear from the consolidation as the red-shirt protesters were committed to protesting peacefully.

“We regret any inconvenience the relocation will cause to business owners in the area but information we have from inside the Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) indicates that certain faction are still intent on using violence against the red-shirt protesters.

“Currently many of our supporters are participating in Songkran celebrations and we have determined that the risk of further violent assaults against our peaceful demonstration are highly likely and believe that our best defense against any such attacks is to consolidate our protest at Ratchaprasong”, he said.

Foreign diplomats briefed on pro-democracy struggle

Phan Fa Bridge March 25, 2010: Core leaders of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) have met with 30 representatives of 16 foreign countries to explain the ongoing peoples protest for democracy at Phan Fa Bridge.

Veera Musikhapong, chairman of the UDD, told the foreign representatives that he wished the ongoing protest would end tomorrow, but that the UDD was prepared to continue rallying using peaceful means until Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolved the parliament and returned the power to the people.

The meeting, which lasted more than two hours, saw government representatives of Malaysia, Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Singapore, the EU, and the USA, along with the ambassadors of the Netherlands and New Zealand, receive an in depth briefing on the aims of the red-shirt protests.

Mr. Veera said the diplomats were told the UDD intended to continue rallying peacefully to achieve its goal, which he said the diplomats said they understood.

When questioned on the roll of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr. Veera said the diplomats were told that while many red-shirts still admired Mr. Thaksin, he was not bank-rolling the protests as claimed by the government and was merely a symbol or figurehead that was uniting grassroots democracy supporters.

“I told the diplomats that this protest is about democracy, it’s about personal freedoms, it’s about a system created by the aristocracy for the benefit of the aristocracy that disenfranchises the poor and the rural classes and is not about Thaksin or any other individual”, he said.

Mr Veera said many of the diplomats had expressed their desire to visit the rally site at Phan Fa Bridge to meet some of the protesters and assure themselves of the peaceful beliefs of the protesters and the UDD is currently making arrangements for the diplomats to make an inspection of the rally site.

PHAN FA BRIDGE, MARCH 25, 2010: 2,000 red-shirt protesters from the northern province of Chiang Mai arrived at the Phan Fa Bridge protest site earlier this morning. There are small convoys from several northern and northeast provinces currently traveling to Bangkok.

Some of the people who have been at Phan Fa Bridge for the last week or so will return home to attend to business or personal requirements, while some others will stay. The UDD leadership has expressed their sincere gratitude to those returning home for the sacrifices they have made in the name of democracy and understand that people have different time and financial constrains that limit how long they are able to stay away from home.

The return home of some protesters should not be viewed as a weakening of the protest as other people are replacing those who are returning home. Many of the red-shirt protesters that are returning home have told the leadership they are prepared to return if needed.

Phan Fa Bridge March 25, 2010: Thailand is in danger of becoming a failed nation with a despot government, while the possibility of another coup d’état has increased by 50 percent in the last week.

These were the grim warnings from a group of Pheu Thai Party (PTP) politicians after their passage to Thailand’s Government House was blocked yesterday by thousands of armed troops, concrete barricades and razor wire.

Refusing to bow to what they termed “the intimidatory and aggressive actions” of the Democrat-led government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, the opposition members of parliament yesterday refused to traverse military lines to enter the parliament, opting to boycott the house sitting instead.

Representing more than 28 million people, the opposition PTP MPs said the surrounding of the parliament and Chitralada Palace, in addition to having military personnel in the parliamentary chamber, was unprecedented in Thailand’s history and one that should cause every Thai deep concern.

According to PTP MP Thitima Chaisaeng, the deployment of armed troops, barricades, water canon trucks and other military vehicles inside and surrounding the parliament is intended to intimidate opposition MPs, the red-shirt protesters at Phan Fa Bridge and normal Thais.

Describing the current situation as a violation of every Thai’s freedom and rights, Ms. Thitima said the heavy handed approach by the government and/or the military are a direct violation of Thailand’s constitution.

“We demand that the military remove all of the physical barriers and troops from and around the parliament so that normalcy can return and so that the integrity and honour of the legislative branch is returned.”

The PTP MPs questioned whether the military was acting on the instructions of PM Abhisit, or whether the increased military presence and fortifications were a unilateral decision taken by army command.

“Mr Abhisit has been a puppet prime minister since he ran away from the Asean summit in Pattaya last April and has failed to demonstrate any leadership skills. The massive deployment of armed troops inside and around the parliament has all the hallmarking of a coup d’état.

“The actions of the government and military are damaging Thailand’s reputation internationally, detracting investors, unnerving tourists and intimidating Thai citizens.

“The situation has now become a travesty and the only solution is for Mr Abhisit to immediately dissolve the house, return the power to the people and hold fresh elections”, the MPs said.

The MPs said PTP was ready to go to the people and face fresh elections as soon as the house was dissolved and said that irrespective of the outcome, they will abide with it.

Until the military personnel and barricades are removed from and around the parliament the MPs said they will not return to the chamber.

They said that while the government is free to push through Acts of parliament without the opposition being in the chamber, they expected these will be rejected by the Senate and returned to the lower house.

The Fourth Statement by the

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship

The UDD demands that PM Abhisit stops violating our right to protest peacefully

Today the government held a regular cabinet meeting at the Ministry of Health, far from the red-shirt’s protest site. Suspecting that it might have been a trap, an opportunity for the government to provoke violence with the peaceful protesters, we didn’t take the bait and instead sent our volunteers out on motorbikes to hand out thousands of “Dissolve the Parliament” stickers to the Thai people.

After the meeting adjourned, someone fired M79 grenades into the parking lot of the ministry. Of course no one was injured, but two cars were damaged.

The UDD believes the M79s were fired by agents of the government as it wouldn’t make any sense for red-shirts to do such a thing. The red-shirt rally is a peaceful gathering and our supporters have no weapons.

While it is true that we might want to disrupt a government meeting, we would make our point with a peaceful, constitutional protest.

The UDD demands that the government investigate this incident at once. The people of Thailand need to know who is behind any violent incident in these critical times and we warn Mr. Abhisit not to underestimate our intelligence.

We learned from the April 2009 tragedy that this government is not above using tricks and stratagems to provoke violence and harm its own people in order to accomplish its political goals.

Today we fear that the government will use the old tactics all over again, and we are suspicious of new tactics.

The government has placed concrete barriers and razor wire to block the palace area, although this is completely unnecessary. These measures imply that the red-shirts are a threat to the King, a complete untruth.

It is the government of Abhisit Vejjajiva which has threatened everybody!

We demand that PM Abhisit stops violating our right to protest peacefully without weapons. It is you who is provoking us to use higher strategies to continue our legal protest. The Thai people cannot tolerate the threats and intimidatory tactics you are using.

In order to keep all the demonstrators safe, we urge you to stop the abusive display of force toward us. No other government has ever used such an abusive show of force as your government has – you even poured gasoline on the streets in order to make it slippery and difficult to ride our motorbikes.

We were happy to move away from the Rama V area so that this area can be used for shops in the 2010 Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Red Cross Fair, not for the military to seize the area.

We know that you will try to seize more and more of our lawful protest sites. We will evaluate new strategies to exercise our lawful and constitutional rights tomorrow, after we see what happens tonight.

It is the tonight’s occurrences that will determine what our tactics will be tomorrow.

The Third Statement by the
United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship

Continuing the demand for Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva
to dissolve the Thai parliament.

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) rally last Saturday on the streets of Bangkok was held to pay respect to Bangkokians and to explain the purpose of the red-shirts rally.

Our primary goal remains maintaining pressure to force PM Abhisit to dissolve the parliament and to engage alternatives to restore peace and harmony in Thailand.

To date we have received tremendous support and understanding from Bangkokians.

The government of PM Abhisit was not established with legitimacy or democracy, but rather, established with the support of the Thai military. The government uses double standards in its administration, with corrupt practices occurring in many government projects.

In short, we say that the Democrat Party government of Abhisit Vejjajiva is the centre of all the conflicts in our country.

We demand that the government return the power to the people and hold fresh elections.

Apart from this, we have no other demands.

As a group the UDD will only negotiate with PM Abhisit, as he is the only one with the authority to dissolve parliament.

As soon as he agrees to our demand we will immediately end all demonstrations.

We hope for a fair and just democratic election and pledge to support whatever the outcome is. We likewise hope that other parties will also accept whatever the outcome of an election is and that all sides of the political spectrum will then work for the prosperity of Thailand.
