The Fourth Statement by the

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship

The UDD demands that PM Abhisit stops violating our right to protest peacefully

Today the government held a regular cabinet meeting at the Ministry of Health, far from the red-shirt’s protest site. Suspecting that it might have been a trap, an opportunity for the government to provoke violence with the peaceful protesters, we didn’t take the bait and instead sent our volunteers out on motorbikes to hand out thousands of “Dissolve the Parliament” stickers to the Thai people.

After the meeting adjourned, someone fired M79 grenades into the parking lot of the ministry. Of course no one was injured, but two cars were damaged.

The UDD believes the M79s were fired by agents of the government as it wouldn’t make any sense for red-shirts to do such a thing. The red-shirt rally is a peaceful gathering and our supporters have no weapons.

While it is true that we might want to disrupt a government meeting, we would make our point with a peaceful, constitutional protest.

The UDD demands that the government investigate this incident at once. The people of Thailand need to know who is behind any violent incident in these critical times and we warn Mr. Abhisit not to underestimate our intelligence.

We learned from the April 2009 tragedy that this government is not above using tricks and stratagems to provoke violence and harm its own people in order to accomplish its political goals.

Today we fear that the government will use the old tactics all over again, and we are suspicious of new tactics.

The government has placed concrete barriers and razor wire to block the palace area, although this is completely unnecessary. These measures imply that the red-shirts are a threat to the King, a complete untruth.

It is the government of Abhisit Vejjajiva which has threatened everybody!

We demand that PM Abhisit stops violating our right to protest peacefully without weapons. It is you who is provoking us to use higher strategies to continue our legal protest. The Thai people cannot tolerate the threats and intimidatory tactics you are using.

In order to keep all the demonstrators safe, we urge you to stop the abusive display of force toward us. No other government has ever used such an abusive show of force as your government has – you even poured gasoline on the streets in order to make it slippery and difficult to ride our motorbikes.

We were happy to move away from the Rama V area so that this area can be used for shops in the 2010 Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Red Cross Fair, not for the military to seize the area.

We know that you will try to seize more and more of our lawful protest sites. We will evaluate new strategies to exercise our lawful and constitutional rights tomorrow, after we see what happens tonight.

It is the tonight’s occurrences that will determine what our tactics will be tomorrow.
